Ortelius was built in Gdynia, Poland in 1989 and served as a special purpose vessel for the Russian Academy of Science. She is an ice-strengthened small ship (rated to the equivalent of 1A; the highest ice rating) designed for polar expedition cruises in the Arctic and Antarctica. Limited to no more than 116 passengers and 53 cabins, her size ensures a flexible polar experience with maximum wildlife opportunities. Ortelius carries ten high-powered zodiacs for landings and exploration. A $1.5 million cabin reconfiguration in 2014 (Deck 5) and 2016 (Deck 4) completed the vessel’s refurbishment program, bringing Ortelius to an upscale hotel standard. The refurbishment featured brand new furnishing including beds, wardrobes, desks and chairs. The cabins and corridors feature new carpets, ceilings, piping and wallpaper.

Three meals of international cuisine are served in the two dining areas and prepared by the ship's experienced chefs. The meals are not quite to Michelin-star standard, however they are healthy, hearty and will warm your insides after a busy day exploring.
Ortelius offers a comfortable hotel standard experience onboard, with ample public areas including two dining areas that accommodate all expeditioners at the same time (no reserved seating), a bar/observation lounge with six large windows, comfortable lecture room and several observation areas across multiple decks. There is a spacious bridge, which is accessible to polar travellers. The Ortelius has a highly-experienced international nautical crew of 20, 19 international hotel staff, 7 expedition staff in Antarctica (1 expedition leader and 6 guides/lecturers), 8 expedition staff in the Arctic (1 expedition leader and 7 guides/lecturers) and 1 doctor. Expeditions are primarily developed to offer travellers a quality exploratory wildlife program, trying to spend as much time ashore as possible.
