For a relatively short voyage, this 11-day expedition aboard the research ship Akademik Sergey Vavilov packs a serious punch and offers fantastic scenery, wildlife, historic and scientific interest. On the way south, enjoy eight days of off-ship exploration visiting a large number of landing sites and cruising among the ice floes in zodiacs, before reaching the Antarctic Circle in the vicinity of Detaille Island. Explore the coastline visiting several classic locations such as Petermann Island and the iceberg ‘graveyard’ at Pleneau Island. Transit the Lemaire Channel if ice 

conditions permit and make continental landings at Paradise Harbour or nearby Neko Harbour. Both locations offer outstanding hiking opportunities. Explore on shore by foot, observing wildlife colonies, visiting historic huts and science bases, photographing icebergs and soaking up the incredible landscapes. The journey concludes with visits to a number of locations in the South Shetland Islands. From King George Island in Antarctica fly back to Punta Arenas in just two hours – saving more than two days crossing back to South America.

Akademik Sergey Vavilov is a purpose built oceanographic vessel featuring complex internal stabilisers and powerful engines. She accommodates just 96 guests. Combined with multi-pitch propulsion and bow and stern thrusters she offers exceptional maneuverability. Expansive observation decks featuring 360 degree views make her the perfect platform for operation in Antarctica and the High Arctic.

The Akademik Sergey Vavilov is modern, comfortable, safe and ice strengthened (rated Lloyds 1A). From small group sessions to briefings for all expeditioners, there are public spaces onboard the ship ideally suited for each and every need.

A separate lounge and bar, as well as a library provide ideal places to sit and relax or catch up on some reading. A selection of movies and documentaries can also be watched in the lounge.

The sumptuous meals prepared by the culinary team are enjoyed in the dining room, which can host all passengers in a single seating and will keep you feeling healthy and strong for the myriad activities offered throughout the voyage.

Other facilities include the theatre-style presentation room, gift-shop, fitness room, massage room, hot water spa, sauna and plunge pool. There’s also a dedicated expedition ‘mud-room’ where you prepare for your off-ship excursions.
